Book review: Divergent

Divergent, Veronica Roth

Divergent is a YA, dystopia kind of novel. It is set in Chicago in the future, where the City is meant to have been split into five groups, or factions. These factions (quite like the Hogwarts houses) each represent a different quality or trait one may possess. The factions consist of-

Dauntless- The brave (The faction I fancy myself in!)
Candor- The honest
Erudite- The knowledgeable
Abnegation- The selfless
Amity- The peaceful

You are born into the faction your parents live in, but when you are sixteen you must decide which faction you wish to spend the rest of your life in. Divergent follows the life of a sixteen year old named Beatrice/Tris Prior, and her struggle in the faction she chooses to join.

This book consists of action, romance and a bit of politics between the factions as we discover that not all of them think alike. It is clear that there are going to be faults in the system, I mean come on, not everybody can fit themselves into only one group. There is romance there, but it is not overpowering, it is almost like a side story which I like- especially as so many YA novels have romance or love as there main focus, which is alright, but sometimes it is nice to have a break. It also means it can be enjoyable for guys too.

The characters are all deep and have their own story lines which are innovating and exciting to read about. There are also some twists when we work out that not all heroes are just good, and not villains are just bad.
I literally could not put this book down, and both divergent and insurgent left me in tears (which I will admit is not too difficult) and forced me to spend hours online on tumblr searching for photos and gifs.

Overall its a great book and well worth reading if you enjoy this type of book.

Veronica Roth has already released the squeal called Insurgent, and is planned to release Allegiant (the third) sometime in October. Also, the film is scheduled to be out in march 2014 which I can not wait for!

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy the book
